All campfires are now banned in the Willamette and Mt. Hood National Forests, including in all developed campgrounds. Over 90% of Oregon is currently experiencing drought conditions, and firefighting resources are stretched thin across the west.
Smoking outside of enclosed buildings or vehicles is also prohibited. Propane or liquid fuel stoves are currently still allowed.
See the full text of the fire restriction here.
At Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center we advocate Leave No Trace practices in both our professional and personal adventures! Our Opal Creek Expeditions campers never light an open fire unless in a developed campground or during rainy, cool weather. We encourage all backcountry campers to practice the ultimate fire safety and forgo open fires.
Current fire status
Smoke and firefighting activity from the small Byars Peak fire just north of Detroit is currently visible from the Opal Creek ridgeline. The Forest Service has been successful in keeping the fire limited to the 6 acres currently burning. Byars Peak is approximately 5 miles as the crow flies from Jawbone Flats, and across two valleys, and is not currently threatening any part of the Opal Creek Scenic Recreation or Wilderness Areas. For regular updates, please see the Willamette National Forest Facebook page.
