Outdoor School

An Immersive Outdoor School Experience

At Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center, learning comes alive outdoors. Our outdoor school programs transform forests into classrooms, curiosity into discovery, and students into confident, engaged learners. When students learn in nature, they don’t just absorb information — they build relationships with the land and with each other.

Over four days of discovery, students explore the rich ecosystems of Silver Falls State Park, embarking on guided adventures through temperate rainforests and vibrant habitats. From day one, students learn how trees, birds, lichen, fungi and many other “forest friends” interact and depend on one another. By the end of the week, with brains full of knowledge and hearts full of gratitude, students have developed a deep connection to Oregon’s natural world.

Our curriculum is:

  • Hands-on and inquiry-based
  • Aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
  • Thoughtfully curated and regularly revised with guidance from the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde

We offer programs for all ages — first grade through adults — providing a powerful, place-based learning experience rooted in Oregon’s landscapes.

Learn in One of Oregon’s Most Stunning Natural Classrooms

Our outdoor school takes place on the ancestral homelands of the Kalapuya and Molalla Tribes, now part of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, within the forests, creeks, and waterfalls of Silver Falls State Park — often called the crown jewel of the Oregon State Parks system.

All programs operate out of Camp Silver Creek, a hidden gem nestled among towering trees. The camp’s rustic charm and immersive natural setting create a sense of adventure while supporting meaningful learning and community building.

Funding & Scholarships

State Funding for 5th & 6th Grade Public Schools: All Oregon public 5th and 6th grade schools are eligible for funding through Oregon’s Outdoor School for All Campaign. Applications are submitted at the district level, and eligible programs are reimbursable through Oregon State University's Extension Service: Outdoor School.

Not public 5th or 6th grade? Funding may be available through the Gray Family Foundation for private schools, homeschools, and non-5th and 6th grade schools. Some private and homeschool students may qualify for state funding through dual enrollment with their local public school district.
